- 1Record your pre-pitch Original Brix (°Bx) using 2 drops of cooled wort (e.g. 13.0°Bx).
- 2During or after fermentation, record your current raw Brix reading from the refractometer eyepiece (e.g. 6.5°Bx).
- 3Set your Wort Correction Factor (default: 1.04).

Why does my finished beer read so high on a refractometer?
Refractometers measure light bending through sugar water. Fermentation replaces sugar with ethanol, which bends light significantly more than water. An uncorrected reading of 6.5°Bx looks like 1.026 SG, but after alcohol correction, the true gravity is ~1.010 SG!
What is a Wort Correction Factor (WCF)?
Refractometers are calibrated at the factory for pure sucrose (table sugar). Malt wort contains complex proteins and unfermentable dextrins that bend light slightly differently. Most optical homebrew refractometers have a WCF between 1.02 and 1.06 (standard benchmark: 1.04).
